Bitumen has become an extremely important component of our world, as it is used in several industries mainly for Waterproofing, sealing and widely used in road construction as a very strong binder. Bitumen is a substance that is produced through the distillation of crude oil and known for its adhesive properties. Through distillation, Bitumen is being deprived from its lighter crude oil components, such as gasoline and diesel, remain with the “heavier” Bitumen behind. It has to be refined several times in order to improve its grade and that substance is responsible for different materials in a myriad of industries. As mentioned, the vast majority of bitumen is used by the construction industry, as a constituent of products used in paving and roofing. At elevated temperatures, Bitumen acts like a viscous liquid and can be mixed with other components and manipulated and formed as required and once it cools down, it becomes an inert solid that is extremely durable and hydrophobic.

Penetration Bitumen
Penetration grade bitumen is classified using the penetration property and is the most common types of bitumen used for road construction. It is refinery bitumen that is manufactured at different viscosity, based on its hardness. Penetration grade bitumen is known for its durability and resistance to temperature changes.

30 - 40 Grade
Bitumen penetration grade 30/40 is semi-hard penetration grade bitumen using as paving grade bitumen suitable for road construction and repair also for the production of asphalt pavements.
40 - 50 Grade
Bitumen penetration grade 40/50 is semi-hard penetration grade bitumen used as a paving grade bitumen which is suitable for road construction and repair.
Bitumen 40/50 is one of the most used bitumen grades and it’s a basic material for all other bituminous products.

60 - 70 Grade

Viscosity Grade
Viscosity grades Bitumen are categorized according to Viscosity (degree of fluidity) grading. The higher the grade, the stiffer the Bitumen. In Viscosity Grade, Viscosity tests are conducted at 60 deg.

Cutback Bitumen
Cutback Bituman is made by reducing the viscosity of and ordinary bitumen by adding mostly petroleum type solvent. Cutback Bitumen are used because their viscosity is lower than that of neat asphalt and can thus be used in low temperature applications. After a cutback is applied the solvent evaporates away and only the Bitumen is left. A cutback bitumen is said to cure as the petroleum solvent evaporates. Cutback bitumen are typically used as prime coats and tack coats.

Rapid Curing
Often called “road oils,” are usually a residual material produced from the fractional distillation of certain crude petroleum. Traditionally any kind of aromatic, naphthenic and paraffinic oils are used. Slow Curing liquid bitumen materials can be prepared by blending bitumen with an oily petroleum fraction.

Medium Curing

Slow Curing products are prepared with a light, rapidly evaporating diluent such as a naphtha or gasoline.

Emulsion Bitumen
Bitumen emulsion is a mixture of fine droplets of bitumen and water. But as the bitumen is a petroleum product it doesn’t mix with water and as it is sticky in nature, it doesn’t easily gets disintegrated into fine droplets. To overcome this problem an emulsifier is used. Emulsifier can be defined as a surface-active agent.

Rapid Setting Emulsion (RS)
Rapid setting emulsion sets quickly in contact with aggregates. It is highly used in cheap seals and surface dressing.

Medium Setting Emulsion (MS)
Usually, medium setting emulsions are used in the premixing of bitumen emulsion and coarse aggregates, such as in open-graded mixes.

Slow Setting Emulsion (SS)
Slow setting emulsion sets very slowly. This type of emulsion can be applied to dense graded aggregates mixes, slurry seals and recycling asphalts.

Oxidized Bitumen
Oxidized bitumen is blown from blowing hot air to pure bitumen at the final stage of the purification operation In this process, hot air with a temperature of 200 to 300 degrees Celsius is blown through a perforated tube into a compartment containing bitumen.
As a result of this process, the hydrogen atoms in the bituminous hydrocarbon molecules are combined with air oxygen and the polymerization takes place with the formation of water.
Oxidized bitumen is mainly used for industrial purposes, such as roof insulation, flooring, industrial mastics, pipe coating, and paints.

Modified Bitumen
Modified Bitumen (MB) roofing is an asphalt-based, close cousin of the Built-up-Roof (BUR) designed for buildings with low-slope or “flat” roof structures. Modified Bitumen Roofing Systems are designed to withstand harsh exposure to extreme environmental elements.
Modified Bitumen flat roofing is a single-ply system made of asphalt bitumen, modified with polymers, and reinforced with fiberglass and/or polyester. It is assembled in a unique permutation of layers that compound to increase the roof’s effectiveness.
